Trip Information
Mt Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing to reach the summit, although some people may feel the affects of the thin air. It takes about eight days to climb the mountain. We plan two days before the ascent to allow for acclimatisation and then it takes approximately 5-6 days to reach the summit. The routes are well defined and are led by a highly trained and qualified guides who are registered with the Kilimanjaro National Peaks Board.
The children are in very small groups of four, each with their own EMK member of staff. In addition, we have a member of staff who resides at base camp for further support if required. EMK also employs experienced porters, who are crucial for the expedition and will be at hand to help with the heavier items of the trek up the mountain, including cooking, equipment and specialised mountaineering tents. The EMK adventurers will only need to carry the bare essentials for the day making it an enjoyable trek through the different scenic levels; tropical jungle, moorland, alpine desert and finally the huge glaciers perched at the summit of Kilimanjaro.
A local chef cooks up a superb selection of dishes which include; a hearty breakfast, packed lunch and a delicious hot evening meal. As we ascend up the mountain the nights get colder, so we issue the children with hot water bottles to snuggle up too. We provide highly specialised sleeping bags and tents which have been specifically designed for the cooler mountain nights. Watching the sun rise and gazing across dramatic views of the surrounding African plains from the rooftop of Africa is a truly breathtaking experience.
Kilimanjaro remains a considerable feat of human endurance and determination, which is why summiting this mountain, provides a great sense of achievement!
